A British backpacker is facing ten years behind bars after he was accused of spray painting “Scouser Lee” onto a sacred wall in Thailand.
Lee Furlong and Canadian backpacker, Brittney Schneider, both 23, could be in prison for a decade for allegedly vandalising a wall in northern Thailand.
The pair were arrested in guest house in Chiang Mai on Thursday and are currently being held in a provincial court, police said.
Lee and Schneider were caught spraying a red brick wall near Tha Phae Gate on CCTV, police said.
Police Major Anon Cherdchutrakulthong said: “They admitted to the crime. When people visit somewhere, they should know not to leave graffiti.”
Anon said they do not yet have a lawyer, adding that the young man and woman showed signs of having been intoxicated.
The words “Scouser Lee” were filmed on the wall, although officers have not confirmed Lee’s home town.
The pair face up to 10 years in jail, a fine of up to one million baht (£23,537) or both, if found guilty, police said.
