Expats with Thai families, business people, and medical tourists may be allowed to re-enter Thailand again next week – or even sooner.
COVID-19 task force spokesman Taweesilp Wisanuyothin said today those groups of foreign nationals along with investors and skilled workers could be granted permission to enter the kingdom as soon as Friday if plans are approved.
He said that was all that was currently under consideration for what’s been called the “travel bubble” plan as those groups were considered able to afford 14 days of quarantine upon arrival. Tourists from other low-risk countries, government guests, and short-term business travelers will be considered further down the line.
No new cases of local transmission have been detected for 28 days, thought the spokesman repeated calls for vigilance.
As for Myanmar’s report on Friday that 23 workers deported from Thai detention facilities near the border had been infected, he said 19 had tested positive during two weeks of quarantine in Thailand, so he believes they became infected in other countries. The other four were still being investigated.
Health officials today said three Thai women back from India were found to have COVID-19, bringing total confirmed cases to 3,151 since the outbreak began in January. The death toll has been unchanged from 58 for the past 20 days.
