Progressing with unyielding momentum after the launch of the industry’s first 64MP camera sensor for smartphones, Samsung has now announced the world’s first 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX technology for future mobile devices. It has also been announced that this ‘one of a kind’ mobile sensor was made possible thanks to the collaboration with Xiaomi. We’ll just have to wait and see which ‘soon to be launched’ Xiaomi-branded handset becomes the first to spearhead Samsung’s latest camera technology.
Samsung’s 108MP Mobile Sensor Features a 1/1.33-Inch Size, Improving Low-Light Imaging, and Intelligently Produces Photos With Exceptional Quality
Offering beyond 100 million pixels with the latest announcement, Samsung’s ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor expands into the 0.8μm size offerings that was initially just occupied by the 64MP solution. According to Samsung, its latest launch will produce a resolution equivalent to that of a high-end DSLR camera. Samsung is aiming to put an end to the concerns of customers by letting them know that cramming in as many megapixels in a small sensor will not compromise on image quality. The Korean giant states that this hardware can process exceptional images in dimly-lit conditions.
Featuring a large 1/1.33-inch size, the HMX can absorb more light, and using Samsung’s pixel-merging Tetracell technology, the sensor will be able to produce brighter 27MP images, although this looks to be a case of pixel binning technology and nothing more. If you’re surrounded in a bright environment, the Smart-ISO mechanism intelligently adjusts to a low ISO rating to reduce unnecessary exposure and create more detailed imaging.
Even when using a higher ISO value in low-light conditions, Samsung states that its 108MP sensor will still be able to produce less noise. However, the ISOCELL Bright HMX offering isn’t just made for still imaging, but it will cater to smartphone videography buffs too. According to Samsung, the new sensor supports video recording without losses in field-of-view at resolutions up to 6K (6016 x 3384) at 30FPS.
On Samsung’s news page, the manufacturer states that mass production will commence later this month. This means the first smartphone made in partnership with Xiaomi will most likely be getting several teasers in the month of August, while finally getting an unveiling in September.
We’ll then see if a 108MP sensor was actually worth the hype or if Samsung just wanted those ‘plain old’ bragging rights.
